MISFITS Video Picks for December 26, 2000
This set of 3 DVD's contains the original Fantasia, Fantasia 2000 and a
third DVD packed with extras. Fantasia is a landmark film in the history of
animation and it was a film that only Disney could have made. With Fantasia
2000, Disney has released another near masterwork that stretches the limits
of the medium. To be able to view all the extras about the making of these
features is a special treat. There are featurettes about every segment from
both films, pages of concept art, animated storyboards and deleted scenes.
Both films feature two commentary tracks, with the most interesting being a
commentary track for the original Fantasia that consists of pieced together
interviews and transcripts from Walt Disney himself. I spent the better
part of a weekend wading through the extras in this set and watching the
films. The time investment is well worth it.
My pick is actually a DVD pick - Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas -
Special Edition. This movie is a great look at how a depressed Halloween
King decides to find new life by attempting to take over Christmas, in a
Halloween way. If you are looking for a great story about the spirit of
Christmas, look at this. Ignore that awful movie The Grinch. Don't get
me started on how un-grinch like it was.
The reason I want this to be a DVD pick, over straight video, is that it
includes the shorts Vincent and Frankenweenie. Vincent is one of my
favorite animated shorts of all time. It is a bout a small boy named
Vincent who dreams of being Vincent Price. It is black and wonderful.
Vincent Price even does the narration.
