MISFITS Video Picks for July 24, 2000
My pick would be for Silverado, a 1985 film by Lawrence Kasdan. It stars
Kevin Kline, Scott Glen, Kevin Costner (before he got too self important)
and Danny Glover. They are all brilliant in their performances. The cast
is rounded out by some greats as Brain Dennehy, Linda Hunt, Jeff Goldblum
and John Cleese. It is an action/western. Although I usually dislike
westerns, this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Rent it tonight.
It is a bit on the long side but when you are watching it, it doesn't feel
nearly as long.
I know a lot of people who are huge X-Files fans (big surprise) but I have
never been able to get into it. When asked why, my usual response is that,
based on the couple of episodes I've seen, it seems like an inferior Night
Stalker ripoff.
For those who are not familiar with it, the Night Stalker opus consists of
two made for tv movies (The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler) and a
sixteen episode television series. Starring Darrin McGavin as Carl Kolchak,
an intrepid and abrasive reporter, the shows mixed a film noir-style and a
hard boiled detective story's narration with classic horror elements to
create surprisingly suspenseful and memorable stories.
I checked on
Amazon.com and found that a couple of the series episodes, as
well as the Night Stalker movie are available on video. They have also been
rerun on the Sci-Fi Channel. Pick them up, turn out the lights, and enjoy.
