MISFITS Video Picks for June 5, 2000
starring Ray Milland (forever Mr. Bolt from Escape to
Witch Mountain for
me, although he appeared in over 100 films)
Ruth Hussey (who also had a supporting role in the classic The Philadelphia
Story)
and Gail Russell (who went on to star opposite John Wayne in Angel and the
Badman - another great movie)
This is one of my favorite haunted house/ghost stories (along with 1963's
The Haunting). I first saw it as a child, thanks to my mom, and remember
the chill and thrill of fear at every hinting of a ghost.
About a decade ago, my mom and I rediscovered this movie - and I discovered
an adult enjoyment of the witty dialogue and subtle romance. For those of
you who like their repartee decidedly British, this one is a winner. The
scenery, the character by-play and the humor are so absorbing that it's easy
to miss the very spooky and well-done plot. Bit of trivia: the beautiful
song Stella by Starlight was written for (and is featured in) this film.
From the IMDB:
"Well cast, beautiful to look at, tuneful music, with clever writing and
good acting, it's both a scary little film and a true "whodunit"-type
mystery as well."
A movie that I find to be one of the best acted in the last 20 years is My
Left Foot (1989). It is the story of Christy Brown an Irish quadriplegic
who only has functional control over his left foot. Daniel Day-Lewis shines
as Christy. It was directed by Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father -
also a film I highly recommend). Brenda Fricker shines as his mother. If
you are in the mood for a quiet true story (no exploding helicopter chases)
this is a movie for you.
