MISFITS Video Picks for April 17, 2000
starring Drew Barrymore, Dougray Scott, Angelica Houston
A delightful re-telling of the Cinderella story (sans hookers, thank you
very much), this movie charms with tight dialogue, strong characters, and a
classic plot.
Ms. Barrymore is warm and engaging as Danielle, Dougray Scott makes a very
charming, boyish prince. But the real reason to watch is Angelica Houston
as the wicked step-mother. Her two daughters are also delightful characters
as well, but Angelica's wickedness is the wickedness only a mature, gifted
actress can bring to the screen. And it's all the more wicked for its
almost every-day quality: negligence and disdain.
It's a modern retelling, with "Cinderella" often stronger than her prince,
but you end up rooting for the lovers. Some of their most likable moments
are throw-aways. "Look! I invited the gypsies." (And if you're at all
like me, you'll be loving the ball gowns.)
Not schmaltzy or cheesy, its the perfect chick-flick video pick. Grab a
pint of Ben & Jerry's and settle in for the evening.
Despite my desires that FOX release every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer,
this box set is absolutely essential; the core elements of the "high school" period of the series.
This box set contains six episodes: Surprise, Innocence, Passion, I Only Have Eyes for You,
and Becoming Part 1 and Part 2. These episodes are an emotional train wreck; when love
is cursed, the ultimate price must be paid. While these episodes don't -- by their subject matter -- capture the humor that is so vital to Buffy, the performances, script, direction.
If you're trying to figure out what Buffy The Vampire Slayer is all about, this is a great set to pick up
and enjoy.
