MISFITS Video Picks for March 12, 2000
The Lion in Winter pick by Roger Pavelle
First, consider the cast: Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn, Anthony
Hopkins,
Timothy Dalton, and a bunch of others.
Next, consider the setting: an old French castle populated as it was in
the
late 1100s. Filmed on location.
Then, add the story: One of history's most dysfunctional families, the
first
Plantagenets, arguing with each other over who will be the next king of
England. Throw in international diplomacy, jealousy, adultery, plots,
counterplots, counter-counterplots.
When you add it all together you end up with an incredible movie that can
be
watched over and over with equal enjoyment every time.
Comedy / Western
Directed by: Burt Kennedy
James Garner - Jason McCullough
Joan Hackett - Prudy Perkins
Walter Brennan - Pa Danby
Harry Morgan - Olly Perkins
Jack Elam - Jake
Henry Jones - Henry Jackson
Bruce Dern - Joe Danby
This is set in the "old west" in a gold rush boom town. The town is out
of control and the people are doing their best to find a replacement sheriff
(it seems they turn and run or get shot in a day or so). Garner rides into
town "on his way to Australia" and takes the job to earn some money and pan
for gold. The first thing he does is arrest the youngest son of the 'evil'
family (you know the type, the western style of mobsters) the Danbys.
Things start to get rough, but remember this is a comedy first and a western
second (proof: The house of ill repute is called Madam Orrs House of Young
Ladies) You know that Garner will live to see the final reel. Heck,
everyone we know the name of does.
I find it one of the great bad movies. It never received or deserved any
awards. It is just good clean fun. In 1971 "Support Your Local Gunfighter"
was made with much of the same cast, same director and feel. I think that
it is good, but not as funny as the first one. I do recommend seeing both,
just don't do it on the same night (to be released 5/2/00).
