Ishmael Williams's Top Ten Toon List

10. "the point"
by nilsson.
If you've never seen it, you're missing out. A timeless tale about the stupidity prejudice and the search for meaning in life. I saw this once as a kid, and it stuck with me. It's one of those films I thought I'd never see again, and then it shows up at the rivertown sale. If I could pick only 1 animated film to ever show Sam, even though this is in the #10 spot, it would be this one. Thank goodness I've got a few more choices than #1.

9. Toy Story
i'm a sucker for an adventure tale, and let's face it, this one counts. great animation, a good story that can entertain kids and adults alike, and some pretty groovy one-liners. tim allen and tom hanks do great voice-overs.

8. "Duck! Rabbit! Duck!", "Rabbit Seasoning" and "Rabbit Fire"
Tim and Kat have said it all. When I think Bugs and Daffy, I immediately go to these cartoons. I think these are bugs at his best. (honorable mention in this spot is the Wile E. Coyote \ Bugs Bunny paring I think of it as "Super Genius")

7. The Sorcerer's Apprentice
"Fantasia" is good; this is the gem. Perfect music, and a magical theme.

6. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
This one came so close to being higher on the list. I thought this was a tremendous achievement in animation, and a brilliant concept in bringing together the characters from the 2 great animation houses. Add the scene when Bugs and Mickey are on screen together, and you have one of the truly great modern classics.

5. What's Opera Doc?
Bugs. Elmer. Wagner. what more do you need to say? (apocalypse now will never be the same for me. ask me if you need to know...)

4. Bambi Meets Godzilla
I howled. I screamed. I shed tears. I busted a gut. Probably the most fabulous short I've ever seen. And I saw it just before a midnight showing of either "Gremlins" or Rocky Horror.

3. Animaniacs, specifically "Les Miseranimals" and "Meeting the Devil"
Does anybody else know that this series makes Warner Brothers the only animation house of whom I know to create 2 successful sets of characters? And these guys are fabulous. I love that nothing is sacred, and the genius that goes into creating their parodies. Witness "Les Miseranimals", a complex parody of a complex musical. A masterful job of getting the look, feel and flavor of the music on which it is based, and the perfect antidote to 3 hour musical. The one I call "Meeting the Devil" has everything you'd want in a very funny cartoon, including a fabulous cameo by Dr. Leonard "bones" Mccoy.

2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Okay, so if you haven't figured it out, I'm a sentimentalist. This is the cartoon that sparks the Christmas spirit in me. I am always moved by the transition of the grinchly, crotchety, nasty old...well, Grinch into someone who has a heart an truly GETS what Christmas is supposed to be about. Boris Karloff's narration is fabulous, and works as an audio piece just as well as the video.

1. A Charlie Brown Christmas
Okay, so if you haven't figured it out, I'm a sentimentalist. This one IS Christmas for me. Charlie's idealism vs. the materialism of Lucy and Snoopy. With the aid of the penultimate philosopher/idealist, Linus, we are truly reminded what Christmas is all about. Linus' moment on the stage has never failed to bring a tear to my eye and a smile to my heart. Just warm fuzzies all around.
