What's up Doc?
Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal before they started taking
themselves too seriously. This is one of my all time favorite movies and
contains one of the funniest car chase scenes ever.
Ruthless People
Bette Midler and Dany Devito at their peak in this tale of
kidnapping and marital breakdown. It also has the oddest use of a dust buster
in history.
Young Frankenstein
Mel Brooks at his best. It's impossible to watch this
movie without falling down laughing.
Victor/Victoria
Julie Andrews playing a female singer pretending to be a
gay male entertainer who pretends to be a woman. 'Nuff Said.
To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.
Similar in theme to La
Cage au Folles (Birdcage in it's not as funny American version) and Priscilla
Queen of the Desert which are all funny, this one gets my vote. Patrick Swayze
and Wesley Snipes as drag queens. (If you want something surreal, try watching
Snipes in this and Blade or Demolition Man on the same day.)
Arsenic and Old Lace
One of the best of the screw ball comedies of the
30's. Cary Grant is hilarious as a writer who learns his elderly maiden aunts
secret pastime.
The Hospital
George C. Scott in one of his rare comedies. (Best scene is
the explantion that if you want to hide a murdered body in a hospital for
several hours, the best thing to do is put it on a stretcher in the emergency
room.)
Jumping Jack Flash
Whoopi Goldberg's best comedy movie. I love when she
tries to figure out the words to Jumping Jack Flash in an attempt to find the
secret computer password.
My Man Godfrey
Another comedy from the 30's when they were truly an art
form. An heiress falls for her butler, who is not what he seems.
The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming
This movie about a
Russian Submarine aground on the beach of a very conservative New England
village poked great fun at the Cold War, Commie baiting, and the US attitude
toward Russia.
