Perrin Klumpp's Top Ten Science Fiction and Fantasy Novels
A quick 10 without thinking, or I can't make up my mind!
War for the Oaks - Emma Bull. Set in Minneapolis it is both a great
fantasy novel, a love story and neat to see if you've been to all the places
in the book.
The Deed of Paksnarrion - Elizabeth Moon. Others have gone into
detail, a great series. One of the few that the second book left me in
disbelief.
The Gossamer Axe - Gael Baudino.
A harper ends up in Denver using rock
and roll to fight the Elves for her lover. A really wonderful book and the
description doesn't do it any justice.
Magician - Raymond Feist. Set in what started as a gaming supplement
world, this book is a fave of mine for years. Really, really well done.
Path of the Fury - David Weber. An ex-drop commando makes a pact with
the sole remaining fury (of Greece) to revenge herself on the pirates that
killed her family. Set in the future, the story is great fun and I wish
he'd do a sequel.
Door in the Hill - I wish I knew who did this, it's by scholastic press.
I read it when I was 8 and still remember the story of a boy who falls
through the hill into our world and must deal with the fact that he can read
minds. I'd give almost anything to find this book again.
Mike's Note: It's not in Amazon under that title, so if you know what it is....
Honor of the Queen - David Weber. Heck, I could pick almost any of the
Honor Harrington series, but since this is the first I went with it. A
strong female lead in "Horatio Hornblower in space".
Have Spacesuit - will travel - R. Heinlein. One of the first SF books I
read, this your adult is just lots of fun.
Anita Blake - Laurel K. Hamilton. Once again, you can pick almost any of
them and it really depends on my mood. A petit vampire executioner, zombie
raiser and necromancer. DON'T piss her off!
Last of the really great Wangdoodles - Julie Andrews Edwards. I have read this book
so many times. It is a delight each time. A story of the power of the
imagination.
Many others I might put in the top 10 if I did this again, so I'll leave
this as is and wish it was a top 30+
