Jason Enberg's Top Ten Science Fiction and Fantasy Novels

In no particular order:

  • Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
The best. The master. Books with a very rich world. The books that sucked me in, and they still remain unsurpassed.

  • Thomas Covenant novels - Stephen R. Donaldson
Many people may disagree with this one, but I think it is a testament to Mr. Donaldson's writing ability that he could create a character that is so universally hated by the readers.

  • Saga of Pliocene Exile - Julian May
Neat characters especially Felice and Aiken Drum. Cool psionic abilities. And interesting alien cultures. Although the series does go down hill quickly after The Golden Torc.

  • The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks
With the exception of a kind-of-hokey ending (unfortunately common in fantasy books for some reason), a fun fantasy romp with sieges, and magic, and even a love story.

  • The Belgariad - David Eddings
Despite being stereo-typed by the country of their birth, the character in these stories are fun and funny. Also a very simple but neat magic system. Oh, yeah, a childish love story.

  • The Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan
With perhaps as many as hundred distinct characters this series is truly epic, not only in the number of printed words. Great magic system. Wonderful characters. And several love stories (is there a pattern here?).

  • Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett
A master of mainstream fiction, Mr. Follett takes a step back in time to write a rich story about the construction of cathedral in Medieval England. Great characters to love and hate in this book.

  • The Deed of Paksnarrion - Elizabeth Moon
The first book is an excellent book about life in a mercenary company. The last 2 books, while not as strong in originally as far as storyline goes, are very excellent in their presentation of paladins and priests.

  • The Outlaws of Sherwood - Robin McKinley Ok, so maybe this doesn't really fall in my top 10 but I thought it was such an original telling of the old boring Robin Hood legend that I wanted to let others know about it. (might have a love story too :)

  • The Time Master Trilogy - Louise Cooper
I also have to list this group of books. Maybe a little slow in book 2, but this series has a neat pantheon and a cursed main character. And a tragic love story.
