George Richard's 2001 Lists

I only saw 34 films that were released in 2001 and I missed several of the "biggies" I was overall disappointed by what I saw but here's the best (and worst) as I saw them.

10

Moulin Rouge
This film surprised me despite my initial distaste for new songs in period pieces (see # 6 worst list) it is both memorable and passionate. I thought it missed, but not by much. Nicole Kidman couldn't save it though she tries valiantly and beautifully. It gives hope to an almost dead genre, hey #10 is a big step for me for a musical

9

Blow
Yeah, OK the Music and the memories, could this be a Baby boomer From Here to Eternity?

8

Monsters Inc.
Funny but formulaic, even for a kids movie. This wouldn't make it in a more powerful year.

7

Final Fantasy
I had to see this one a second time just to get by who's that? Voice game. Then I found a very good story, and very good SF in the best tradition.

6

K-Pax
All right, who's crazy here? I'm still not sure. Very strong performances by Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey

5

The Others
Nicole Kidman shows the depth and style that makes her the one of the best and most desirable actress' on screen today, in a very interesting horror film that deserves respect for the less traveled path it takes.

4

A Beautiful Mind
Great story, well-acted, sympathetic courageous mentally impaired character, Crowe fills out his portfolio with another Oscar nomination.

3

Vanilla Sky
Ok, so Tom may be crazy (see number 5) and he acts the part in a very thoughtful SF drama point. It's not the movie you think it is.

2

Memento
Unique, unprecedented, humorous, striking, mesmerizing, surprising, non-linear, pick and adjective and see it

1

Shrek
Funny, Imaginative and durable. I'm still not bored after 8 viewings with my niece (and 80 to go). Dragon was much better than LOTR. Imagine that, me picking a kids film as by best of the year.

Worst Films of the Year

10

Swordfish
The opening SFX is worth the price of the rental, then remove the tape and return it. Not even Halle Berry's Breasts can save this one.

9Planet of the Apes
I wanted to like this movie, I even bought the DVD looking for redeeming content such as alternate endings. I'm so ashamed
8

Dr. Dolittle 2
Should have done nothing at the boxoffice, now we'll have to hear about DD3 (Anyone else thing this is a really strange road for Eddie Murphy?)

7Pearl Harbor
A lousy love story that would have been improved by 3 more casualties at Pearl Harbor, makes you want to shout BANZAI!!!
6 A Knight's Tale
Renfest is better at least the peasants there don't chant We will, We will, Rock you!!
5Lara Croft Tomb Raider
It's not a video game about a character's ass, It's about her breasts! The two most interesting CGI characters this year can't save this one
4The Mummy Returns
He should have stayed dead, horrible story, poor CGI crap compared to the original.
3Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
What that they did't get academy awards for their other crap? At least Dogma had a chance of a miracle.
2Evolution
Kinda makes me want to become a creationist
1Freddie got Fingered
I won't even go there, no one should.
