Todd W's 2000 Films
Hmmm. Well, I really, really had to dig to find 10 movies in 2000 that
caught my attention for whatever reason:
High Fidelity
It was fun. I could relate, well-made, well-written, but the happy
ending dragged it down (yes) and some of the characters were a little
thin.
Gladiator
One of the better films Ridley Scott has made. Great action, good
plot and performance; I actually enjoyed it more on the second and
third viewings, which is always a good sign.
Chicken Run
It rocks. It's funny and it's got cute chickens. Scottish ones, even.
O Brother, Where Art Thou
Well, it's a Coen Bros film, so that's an automatic bonus against
sucking. However, it was one of the weaker Coen Bros films, but that
still puts it far above the Hollywood herd.
Shadow of the Vampire
Probably the best of 2000, I'd have to say. Fun, smart, scary and a
logical ending that isn't crammed onto the story. Great performances,
obviously.
The Way of the Gun
A little slow and thin, but this hour-long shoot-out is the best of
the year.
Time Code 2000
I thought I'd hate it. Yeah, a bit wanky and experimental, it got dark
and provocative quick enough to make it interesting.
The Cell
Stupid plot...a beautiful dream.
Godzilla 2000
We all have our reasons.
Nurse Betty
Not great, but certainly one of the more imaginative films to be out
this year. Interesting presentation, POV and morality that was far
from standard.
The Worst (I saw):
Unbreakable
A nice argument has been made in it's defense. Guilty as charged.
Dungeons & Dragons
I had forgotten there were movies that were this bad...bad.
Proof of Life
Yech. Chick-flick with explosions and a ludicrous plot and too many
hugs.
The Big Kahuna
Great first hour, which the last half-hour did a perfect job of
annhilating.
Gone in 60 Seconds
Hmm. There's Angelina Jolie and then...well...cars...
