Jason Enberg's Top Ten Films
- Princess Mononoke
Mononoke has probably THE most original plot of all the movies I saw this
year. And this
is probably entirely due to the fact that it builds on eastern
mythology and philosophy and not western. I also liked the fact that
no one in the movie was truly good and no one was truly evil. There
was also no "traditional" happy ending. When I saw "My Best Friend's
Wedding" I thought it would have been a much better movie if Julia
Roberts' boss had not shown up at the end of the movie to "save" her.
In fact the first time I saw Mononoke it was in Japanese with no
subtitles, but I found it so visually interesting I was rivited.
- Run Lola Run
Very thought provoking. Doesn't change the way you live but fun stuff to
mull over on a rainy day.
- Perfect Blue (not released in Mpls, saw in
Berkeley)
Worthy of Hitchcock. Rarely has insanity been so well depicted
visually.
- The Sixth Sense
Sleeper of the year. A very pleasant surprise.
- The Matrix
Hong Kong "Hi-Wire" action comes to the US, finally.
- Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Awesome Jedi. Excellent special effects. But like Return of the
Jedi very slow and tailored for children.
- Sleepy Hollow
Another delightfully Tim Burton movie. If you love his style this movie is
classic.
- Galaxy Quest
"I knew it was real!"
- Man in the Moon
Superlative acting performance. "I will impersonate a man. Come, enter into
my imagination and see him."
- Runaway Bride
Delightful, simple, standard love story.
