George Richard's Top Ten Films of 1999
| 10)
| "Man in the Moon"
Pure channeling, Carey doesn't act, he is Andy Kaufman,
just like so many missed his humor (or we rather the unwilling foils of it)
This film plays like Andy's final joke on the world.
|
| 9)
| "Three Kings"
It didn't play in Peoria but this political Kelly's Hero's
went against the prevailing winds and still delivered laughs and gunplay
while giving you a realistic group of buddies you actually care about.
|
| 8)
| "Stir of Echoes"
A rare thing, a well done horror film that actually
walks the edge of madness and the metaphysical. I think it's probably Kevin
Bacons best film (compared to?!?).
|
| 7)
| "The Mummy"
Great old fashioned adventure with Grade A CGI and SFX, an
original retelling (is that an incongruity) that lets Brendan Fraiser be the
type of Cartoon Character Action Hero that he was meant to play (with
depth).
|
| 6)
| "Lola Rennt" (Run Lola Run)
Great concept, Rewind life, Great pumping sound track, and a
rhythm that brings it to life, Great Film.
|
| 5)
| "October Sky"
A movie that makes it OK to be a nerd, even better, it
actually glorifies intellectual and scientific achievement. What's gotten
into Hollywood?!
|
| 4)
| "Galaxy Quest"
Hey we all laughed, cheered and groaned, If only Bill,
Leonard, Forrest and Jimmy could have done it. It carries the SF banner
proudly into an uncomprehending world and makes the world laugh with us.
|
| 3)
| "The Green Mile"
This years Academy Award winner for both Best Pic and best
supporting actor (Michael Duncan) this tear jerker delves into the souls of
everyone who sees it with its honest portrayal of an impossible situation
and
the men that define it.
|
| 2)
| "The Matrix"
It Rocks, Start to Finish, Front to Back, Take the Red Pill, You
can't Ever go back. Question Authority? This film Questions Reality and
Wins!
And the Top Film of 1999 (as tabulated by our home office in Minneapolis)
|
| 1)
| "The Sixth Sense"
No Argument, I can't remember the last time a film
threw me
such a curve. I maybe stupid but I never saw It coming. This film was well
crafted, acted and even more surprising, respected by those who saw it.
Consider, you didn't even have to see Blair Witch to know the entire story
and Phantom Menace spoilers were every where but if you asked about 6th the
response was "I don't want to spoil it for you but..It's a great movie go
see
it" That's a good film.
