Developed and initiated in 1999,
MISFITS “In The Schools” Program started by sponsoring local,
published author visits to the St. Paul School system. Since
then the “In The Schools” Program has expanded to include
sending NASA, Reptilian and Robotics demonstrators.
The program has served numerous
St. Paul, Minneapolis and Suburban area schools and has provided
educational entertainment to hundreds upon hundreds of Metro
area children, ranging in age from elementary schoolers to
high schoolers. Relying on the rich, metro area fan base talent
to obtain experienced demonstrators, MISFITS sponsors the
specific programs – either local author, robotics personnel,
reptilian experts or NASA enthusiasts – to each specific school.
The program with it’s different
demonstrations is free to all participating schools and
libraries. MISFITS members, their families and friends benefit
from the program as MISFITS sponsors and pays for each
demonstration at each school. Demonstrations have varied from 1
hour to 4 hours. Writing workshops, 1-2 hour “Physics in Space”
NASA demonstrations, 1-4 hour Robotics demonstrations
(specifically with
Lego
Mindstorms Robotics), to 1-2 hour reptile
demonstrations with iguanas and frilled dragon lizards.
At this time MISFITS is working
towards again expanding the program by including sponsoring the
University
of Minnesota Raptor Center’s educational
program. MISFITS would be sponsoring visits to the schools by
educators from the Raptor Center along with the raptors (Owls,
Hawks and Falcons) to local Metro area schools.
To find out how to obtain this
MISFITS service for your schools or library please contact Erin
