MISFITS Parties

Hunt for Red Octoberfest Marscon 2000

A lost Russian submarine, root beer and strange music with a dance beat. The plot to Dirty Dancing II? Well, not exactly. The MISFITS/CONvergence party, The Hunt for Red Octoberfest set sail Friday night (May 12th) at Marscon 2000. We remained at periscope depth for most of Friday, surfacing to watch Operation Petticoat (the Cary Grant version) and of course, The Hunt for Red October. We also had fun talking with other con-goers and visiting the other parties that were running on Friday. The night finished with a high-speed run through a pair of Space Battleship Yamato tapes (subtitled).

Saturday, we lurked of the coast while most of the crew sneaked ashore to enjoy the Marscon festivities. Of particular enjoyment were the various performances by the Klingons, err, members of the Free Mars People's Party (Free Mars!). Of course the Klingon translations of Shakespeare would have been better in their original Russian, but what can you do?

We maneuvered into position and launched our first salvo around 8pm. Kat Pepmiller began spinning the music and we tapped the root beer and set out the munchies. We continued to have a great crowed dancing and talking throughout the night. Some of the high points of the night were the playing of our anthem, International, for the Free Mars movement (Arise downtrodden workers! Free Mars!), the serving of imported Russian Chocolates and loaning the use of our sound system to the belly dancing group when they had some sound problems (look for them at CONvergence too!). Also popular were the Chernobyl in 2011 Worldcon Bid information and T-shirt. The other parties around the pool area also contributed to a fun environment and the partying and dancing continued into the wee hours of the morning. And sometime before the sun rose to reveal our position, we loaded the crew back on board, submerged, linked up with the Nautilus and set sail.

I would like to thank all the people who made the party a success, either by helping with the setup and tear down, being a host/hostess, contributing food and drink, or by just dropping by and having fun. I had a great time and hope everyone who stopped by did too.
