Karaoke Night IV rolls with the punches
For those of you that made it to MISFITS Karaoke night IV on March 4th, you may have noticed a surprising lack of Karaoke. Our DJ Robb Rolloff had car problems and was unable to make it at the last minute. Well, never let it be said that we here at MISFITS are unresourceful, because we managed to have a great evening in spite of what seemed to be a major setback. After a few phone calls by Tim Wick, we managed to find a DJ and turned the evening into a dance. DJ Devon was a real life saver, pulling his gear together in less than an hour so the evening would not be a total waste. Unfortunately, he didn't have music. No problem when you have a bunch of crafty MISFITS around! Special thanks go out to Windy Merrill, Kat Pepmiller and Jason Enberg who all ran home to get a bunch of CDs for our DJ to spin.
As the music finally started, Nathan Block and Kat Pepmiller suggested we hold a lip sync contest as a Karaoke substitute. Over fifteen people participated and gave some fine performances. The winners in the four categories thought up by our judges Chris Jones, Diana Steben and Tim Wick were: Best performance by a non-performer:George Richard for standing behind The Plaza Maplewood Crew during their rendition of Flash and laughing like Emperor Ming. Best performance by people we need to bribe to make sure they never tell anyone they were here:The Dixie Chicks - a group of young ladies from a party at the hotel whose parents must never be told they were with us. We probably warped their little minds and have no desire to be blamed for it. Most dangerous to furniture:Melinda (we don't know her last name - sorry) who performed on top of a table during her performance of Madonna's Like a Virgin and kicked a chair around during Tears for Fear's Shout. Best performance of a song originated by an actor who played an alien in The Last Starfighter in a non-science fiction role:Ed Eastman for his wonderful rendition of Trouble from The Music Man Our bartender, Roger had a really good time and it is looking like there will be a fight between him and our former bartender Paul over our next event at the Rad South.
We also held a raffle and Dave Morem was the big winner, snagging both the Lost in Space T-shirt and the Austin Powers gift set that included an action figure and an authentic Male Symbol Necklace. Erin Lorenz was our other winner, managing to snag the Micro Machines Pod Racer Arena from Star Wars: Episode I. Thanks to everyone who entered the raffle and donated to our DJ fund to help cover the cost of the event!
Thanks also to the Radisson South, Mark Goldberg, Mindy Laff and others who helped set the event up, Mike Fanslow for selling MISFITS/CONvergence T-shirts and buttons and especially to everyone who brought food donations for The Aliveness Project. We will be trying this again. Karaoke Night 4.1 (clever title to be thought up later) will take place on November 4th at the Radisson South. We swear there will be Karaoke and everything. No, really!
