The Minnesota Society for Interest in Science Fiction and Fantasy (MISFITS) is a non-profit organization with a mission of increasing literacy, community service, and community building. MISFITS also serves as a forum and foundation for celebrating diversity and works to promote the appreciation of, and interest in, Science Fiction and Fantasy.

MISFITS works with people of all ages, ethnic identities, and socio-economic backgrounds to enhance literacy; reaching out to youth and adults in need of reading, writing and computing skills. The ability to express one's thoughts and feelings in different mediums is a skill that should be nurtured and practiced, no matter what the age. MISFITS realizes that for our children, literacy is the key to a happy, successful future.

Membership

Anyone can be a member of MISFITS. Voting membership is obtained by completing the following:

  1. 20 hours total of volunteer time
  2. Only 5 hours can be obtained during the CONvergence convention weekend.
  3. CONvergence convention volunteer hours done OUTSIDE of the convention weekend are included in Volunteer hour totals
  4. Must attend at LEAST 2 membership meetings, 1 of which MUST be the voting meeting. A membership meeting would be A MISFITS staff meeting, a MISFITS Open Meeting, or a CONvergence ConCom meeting. MISFITS or CONvergence Divisional, Departmental, or sub-committee meeting do not count for that total. Attending an event or club gathering does not count towards volunteer hours, however, running an event or hosting a club gathering do count.
  5. All CONvergence Convention Commitee Members are automatically MISFITS voting members (since they fulfill the hour requirement due to their duties) BUT they also must attend the 2 meetings (one of them being the voting meeting).

Among the items that MISFITS members are called to vote upon is the election of the Board of Regents (5 MISFITS coordinators and 7 CONvergence coordinators).

You can either mail us a member form, give it to a coordinator at one of our events, or send us the information by electronic mail to info@misfit.org with your full name, street address, phone number. Let us know what your fan interests are -- do you like role playing, art, filking, comics, anime, animation, literature, costuming, or anything else?. What are your favorite books, TV series and movies?

Also, include what sorts of activities you want to help MISFITS out with -- fund raising, helping to run one of our various events, or any of the other needs we have on out help wanted page -- we really need to hear from you if you are interested in volunteering and becoming a voting member -- our events don't require you to be a voting member to attend.

Club Expectations

In an effort to help insure that MISFITS continues to meet the criteria established by the State of Minnesota for a non profit, the MISFITS Officers have established some minimum club expectations.

Please be aware that these expectations can and will change based upon the needs of the organization and the requirements of the State of Minnesota.

  • Recruit new members to the club.
Are we looking for a "magic number" of new people each year? No. The intent is that the club is making an effort to attract new members.
  • Advertise club meetings.
Just that. Publish something showing your meeting date(s), times(s) and location(s) along with who to contact for questions and how to reach them. This can be done with a simple listing on the MISFITS web site. If you have other sources, those would be fine too. It would be helpful if you included a short description of the club and its activities.
  • Attend a minimum of ONE Open meeting and ONE Staff meeting per year.
The person attending the Open/Staff meeting can be either the club leader/facilitator or a current club member.
  • Volunteer a minimum of ONE hour at the MISFITS room party at CONvergence.
The volunteer can be either the club leader/facilitator or a current club member. If your club wants to volunteer more than one hour or more than on person, great!!! We would love to see you all at the Room Party.

If you have any questions or concerns about these expectations, please, contact one of the MISFITS coordinators.
